As with human rights and democracy, culture is crucial to maintaining a vibrant civil society. With this aim in mind, the Council of Europe adopted the European Cultural Convention as earlier as 1954, soon after the European Convention on Human Rights.

The Convention is intended to promote cooperation between 50 nations in the fields of culture, education and sport.

‘European Heritage Days’, involving the opening to the public of normally closed historic buildings in 50 countries, and the ‘Eurimages’ fund, supporting European cinema, are well known initiatives arising from the European Cultural Convention.

Tout comme les droits de l’homme et la démocratie, la culture est indispensable au maintien d’une société civile dynamique. C’est dans cet esprit que, dès 1954, le Conseil de l’Europe a adopté la Convention culturelle européenne, peu après la Convention européenne des droits de l’homme.
