Kathleen Heugh

Professor Kathleen Heugh is one of the world’s most distinguished scholars in multilingualism, language education, and language policy. She is widely recognised locally and internationally as a leading global authority whose work has shaped policy, practice, and research across continents. The AFMLTA has been privileged to collaborate with Kathleen over many years, benefiting from her keynote contributions, her mentorship of Australian languages teachers, and her unwavering commitment to linguistic justice.

Kathleen was born in South Africa to a family with deep Scottish and Australian roots from whom she inherited a commitment to advocacy for local and linguistic rights. This legacy, combined with her own experiences across South Africa, Australia, and beyond, has fuelled her lifelong dedication to the
recognition and maintenance of first, home, and mother tongue languages, and to confronting the global tragedy of language loss.

She has degrees across three continents, culminating in a PhD in bilingualism and language policy from Stockholm, and a career that has included professorial leadership at the University of South Australia. Her work in Southern Multilingualisms, and her support for bilingual programs in Aboriginal languages in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankuntjatjarra (APY) Lands, exemplify her commitment to community‑anchored, socially just language education.

Kathleen has received major honours which reflect the esteem in which she is held internationally. These include: the Distinguished Researcher Award in Education Futures, the Rhodes University Distinguished Alumni Award, membership of the Salzburg Global Fellowship, and UniSA’s Outstanding Achievement in International Engagement.

Kathleen’s influence spans the UN, UNESCO, the Council of Europe, African ministries, and global research networks. She has authored more than 200 publications, supervised and examined numerous doctoral candidates, and shaped national and international policy frameworks.

Renowned for her wisdom, generosity, and principled leadership, Kathleen embodies the highest ideals of our profession. The AFMLTA wholeheartedly endorses her nomination for the FIPLV award as an
exceptionally deserving recipient.
